Holidays to Bangkok

Bangkok, an exuberant city of contrasts, from the serenity of the exquisitely ornate golden temples to the vibrant nightlife. Holidays to Bangkok include the glittering temples, particularly the fabulous Grand Palace, attractive Wat Po, with its colossal reclining Buddha, and peaceful Wat Arun, Temple of the Dawn on the banks of the Chao Phraya River. Bangkok has many cultural influences, alive at hundreds of wonderful restaurants and the Chinese and Indian market districts.

Holidays to Bangkok include day and overnight excursions to the ancient Siamese capital and World Heritage Site of Ayutthaya, the bustling Damnoen Saduak floating market and the poignant railway, cemetery and museum at the River Kwai.

During your holidays to Bangkok you will learn that before 1939, this country where both rice and tolerance are cultivated with the same ardour was called Siam. But as it had never been colonized, it preferred the name Thailand, signifying "Land of Free Men". They number 60 million, 90 per cent of whom are Buddhists, a fact that permeates all facets of national life. Even in sophisticated Bangkok, women turn out in front of their houses soon after dawn to offer rice to saffron-robed monks. At Bangkok you will find that Thais are very proud of their past and their royalty.

In the tumultuous capital Bangkok, catch your breath in the peaceful atmosphere of a temple. Then experience the passage of time as you glide along the Chao Phraya River in a boat, observing the life of the canals, the colonial quarter with the legendary Oriental Hotel, and the futuristic skyscrapers. While on holidays to Bangkok, take time to wander in Chinatown, where the odours of the opium dens and brothels still linger. But times have changed: children whose parents rode water buffaloes out in the rice fields now programme computers and run production lines in Bangkok. In turn, city-dwellers need to journey 100 km to find an authentic floating market.

Visiting Bangkok in 10 Easy Steps

One Night in Bangkok…as the famous song goes, but there’s much more to this city, including fantastic culture, great value shopping, exciting entertainment and plenty of sights to point a camera at. With only a few days in the Thai capital, here are ten things you really must see or do.

Shopping
Whether you hot-foot it around Bangkok’s latest glitzy addition to its long list of shopping malls – Siam Paragon, or you spend hours sifting through the bargains at Pratunam Market, shopaholics will not be disappointed with Bangkok’s offerings. Ranking as one of Asia’s top shopping hubs, it is no wonder that shopping is a favourite pastime of the Thais. With all of the main centres within walking distance of one another, you can start at Siam Discover Centre; pass through Siam Square on your way to MBK, then hit your final destination, the World Trade Centre. The biggest problem will not be finding what you want; it will be getting it back home.

Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew
The royal residence known as the Grand Palace sits adjacent to Thailand’s most famous temple complex, Wat Phra Kaew. Home of the Emerald Buddha statue, made of jade contrary to what the name suggests; this is one of the most revered religious sites in Thailand and the location of many prestigious ceremonies. Make sure you wear appropriate clothing if you want to visit these must-see landmarks.

Wat Arun
You can catch a glimpse of this important Buddhist temple on the back of a 10 baht coin if you want a taste of what to expect. Nestled between Chinese-style pavilions on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, the highlight of Wat Arun is its Khmer-style tower. At the base of the tower is a sculpture of the Hindu god Indra and depictions of Chinese soldiers and animals, while the tower itself is intricately decorated with seashells and small pieces of porcelain. Once the home of the Emerald Buddha during the time of the Ayutthaya Kingdom, this temple remains one of the most important religious sites in the country.

Lumpini Park
Sit back and relax in the shade of palm trees or rent a peddle boat and explore the lake and its canals, Lumpini Park is a haven of tranquility, ideal for those in need of a rest from the urban jungle. Interesting features include the Thai Lanna and Chinese pavilions, while there is also a pretty Chinese-style clock tower. In addition to some impressive sculptures, there is a children’s play park and a new pavilion designed as a rest area. And if you miss the buzz of the city, the park is right in the heart.

Patpong
The go-go bars and wild nightlife often overshadows Patpong’s other offerings, of which there are plenty of the tame variety. People-watch from one of the cafés, relax and listen to some live music, barter for some bargains at the night market or enjoy a tasty meal; however, if it is trouble that you are looking for, you won’t need to walk farther than a couple of meters before being approached by a tout promising a menu of sexual delights. While this can be annoying, there is no denying that this is a novelty for many and the reasonable percentage of non-sleazy venues makes it a friendly, non-intimidating place to browse.

Chatuchak Market
If you want something specific but you’re not sure where to find it, this is the place. Chatuchak weekend market has vendors selling literally everything, from books to kittens. Busy all year round, expect to be pushed, shoved and pulled at as you wind your way through the narrow alleys. But don’t worry; there are plenty of places to stop for a rest and eat some delicious, inexpensive food. It’s a good idea to decide on a landmark before you begin to explore as the size and crowds here make it easy to loose your hopping companions. A bargain lover’s hunting ground; this is a shopping experience you will not want to miss.

Jim Thompson’s House
Thompson was responsible for rebuilding the Thai silk industry, for which he gained recognition as making an outstanding contribution to Thailand. Before his mysterious disappearance in 1967 on a vacation to the Cameron Highlands in Malaysia, Thompson built this impressive Thai-style teak house, which became the talk of the town. Now a museum, visitors can explore the building and gain insight into this colourful characters life.

Dreamworld
Not all stomach-churning rides, this popular adventure theme park has dozens of attractions including gardens, miniature replicas of seven wonders of the world, live shows and performances, a cable car and even a snow field where you can sling snow balls at your friends. A lively alternative to Bangkok’s traditional sightseeing attractions, the park is easily accessible by train, bus or car.

Khao San Road
If you don’t fancy staying in among hundreds of backpackers, this travellers’ mecca is still worth a look, if just for its cheap pirate CDs. Renowned as a party street, things are unusually quiet until street vendors set up shop in the afternoon. By nightfall, the street is unrecognisable as it fills with throngs of youngsters dining, drinking and watching football. A great place to meet people and make friends, this is also the spot to get cheap travel deals to onward destinations.

Muay Thai Boxing
Only football inspires as much passion as boxing in Thailand, with the latter being considerably more violent. Even if you are a bit reluctant to spend your money on watching men sling punches and lethal kicks, it is surprising how the electric crowd can soon have you up there cheering with the rest of them. Fights are held almost nightly at Lumphini and Ratchadamnoen stadiums, with tickets sol in three tiers, depending on how close you want to be to the action.

In bangkok the drinks are rapidly evolving to keep up with what is modern. In the past the government as tried to crack down on the clubs and bars that generate a small sex and drug tourism. In March 2004 the Thailand authorities enforced a midnight curfew on all businesses, tying to target the bars and nightclubs. This action, a attempt to convey the image to then outside world of Thailand being only a country of temples, beaches and sunshine cause a large cry of outrage from club and bar owners, claiming that the tourism would be affected and unemployment would increase. Bangkok Nightlife - Much More Than Sleaze

I was reasonably well-dressed and relatively sober, so why wouldn’t he admit me? Eventually the club’s manager explained to me that it wasn’t that they doubted my age and that they didn’t doubt I was old enough to be allowed in, it was that they thought I was too OLD to be admitted. I was speechless. Then, in typical Thai style, his face broke into a huge grin: ”ha ha, just joking but I fooled you, ha ha, we only need ID to help police”. He told me that I could come in provided I promised to write something nice about his club, which I refused to agree to do, but which I can in any case do.

The club is called ‘Curve’ and is better suited to the younger generation, as to most older clubbers the music will sound about as harmonious as finger-nails on a blackboard (this aversion on behalf of their elders being of course the reason that the kids love it so much). ‘Curves’ is packed with young Thais every night of the week, doing one of the things they are best at – partying to Thai music. If the Beijing Olympics were to include a ‘partying’ competition, the Thais would win hands-down, especially if teams got negative points for undesirable behavior like drug abuse and violence, which are less prevalent on the Thai club scene than elsewhere in the world. Maybe the judges of this putative partying Olympic event could award extra points for friendly behaviour like sharing your bottle with all-comers, with special bonus points awarded for dancing in a sufficiently foolish fashion as to make everybody else think that they might as well join in, as they couldn’t possibly dance any worse than you do. If such points were awarded, however, then there would no point in holding the competition at all, as Thailand would take the gold, silver and bronze medals every time.

Thais are some of the world’s biggest party animals and Bangkok is their capital, so it is not surprising that it has a humming club scene. The carousing is not confined to weekends in the many clubs offering music for every taste and to clientele of every sexual orientation.

Rooftop bars are a speciality. Classy Vertigo & Moon Bar, an open-air rooftop lounge, offers breathtaking views of the river and the city skyline. Or you can quaff premium beverages in a romantic al fresco ambience at Hu’u, a club, bar and restaurant, whose kitchens won’t disappoint even the most discerning of foodies. The music ranges from Jazz, acid jazz, lounge to tempo.

One of Bangkok’s biggest and best clubs, ‘Hollywood’, is popular with slightly older Thais and with tourists of all ages. Western dance-music is alternated with Thai cabaret in a sensational feast for the eyes as well as ears. It can sometimes be disappointing when the management have been let down by acts and try to fob the audience off with dancing girls, which is not what the place is really about. You can almost imagine the pandemonium backstage: “what, the band haven’t arrived yet, OK, get the girls back out on stage, this time tell them to get their tops off, maybe that will keep the punters happy”. It doesn’t.

One of the nicest things about Thai night-clubs is that they lack the undercurrent of mindless random violence present in many Western establishments, where for many men the second best choice for an evening’s entertainment, if they can’t attract a woman, is to get into a fight with a stranger who they don’t like the look of.

Things are done differently in a Thai club, which the would-be clubber is advised to take note of. Firstly, don’t march up to the bar and order a round of drinks. You should just wait until a waiter comes up to you and takes your order. He will then find you one of the least packed spots to stand and go off and get your drinks. When he returns he will bring a small waist-high drinks table along with your drinks. You never need to go to the bar:

Thailand taught me yet another lesson about patience when I went to a Bangkok club the other day. I was too impatient to hang about waiting to be served, so went to the bar and ordered a drink. After a while a waiter took my order and THB 1,000, then disappeared. For a long time. As my friends tucked into their drinks I became more and more impatient and went to complain. Just after I had got into my stride moaning, the waiter turned up with my drink and the change, making me feel so stupid that I wished the cracks between the floorboards would open up enough for me to be able to dive between them. He had been delayed by having to get change for my drink, which isn’t something that customers normally get until the end of the evening. I had thought that I had already learned the lesson that patience is best in Thailand, but obviously I had not learned it well enough.

One thing we have to thank deposed Prime Minister Thaksin for is for insisting that all clubs close at the ridiculously early hour of 2 am. No doubt he thought he was doing all our livers a favour, as prior to that it had been hard to resist the temptation to stay up all night in this most unabashedly hedonistic of party cities. Insomniacs and die-hards can still, however, find a late drink by going to the seedy Nana Plaza, where old dears serve unlicensed beer to the lust-lorn and where you can enquire as to the location of the latest all-night bars.

Looking for Love

If you are looking for love then wear nice clothes and don’t worry about over-dressing. Thais set great store by how well you dress. If you look presentable then your friends will call you ‘law jang leu-ee’ (handsome) even if you are suffering from a red-eyed hangover squared and the bags under your eyes are big enough to carry your shopping around in.

Much as we’d like to ignore it, something must be said about Bangkok’s sex industry. It is thriving, fuelled mainly by older Western men but also by younger ones who would like to behave better but whose hormones, like immigration officers, block their roads to better places. Trainloads of factory-farmed girls are still ‘harvested’ from the fields of Isaan every spring (directly after school’s-out) and are then sent to Patpong, Patong and Pattaya (the infamous three P’s). It is hard to know what to make of the business. On the one hand, many prostitutes undoubtedly do very well out of the job and drag their families out of poverty through it. On the other, successful prostitutes are the exception and many of the ones who succeed are so brutalized that they seem to lose sight of all morals: there are quite regularly cases in the press about prostitutes murdering their lovers to get their hands on their money.
